Description

If you’re looking for a quick and easy homemade bread that’s full of heart, this American Irish Soda Bread is the perfect option. With its slightly crusty exterior and soft, tender crumb, this bread is ideal for pairing with soups, stews, or even just a little butter. It doesn’t require yeast or rising time, making it the perfect quick fix when you want something fresh from the oven.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a round baking dish or line it with parchment paper. A standard 9-inch round cake pan or a Dutch oven works best for this bread.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add the Wet Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough comes together.

  4. Form the Dough and Shape
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf about 1-2 inches thick. Place the dough into the prepared pan.

  5. Score the Dough
Using a sharp knife, cut an “X” shape into the top of the dough.

  6. Bake and Enjoy
Bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Don’t Overmix the Dough: Stir the dough until it just comes together—overmixing leads to dense bread.
  • Buttermilk Substitute: You can substitute buttermilk with regular milk mixed with 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • Softer Crust: Rub a little butter over the top after baking to soften the crust.
