Description

This Blackberry Vanilla Bourbon Jam combines the rich sweetness of blackberries, the warmth of vanilla, and the bold kick of bourbon. It’s a sophisticated and easy-to-make jam, perfect for spreading on toast, pairing with cheeses, or drizzling over desserts. The subtle bourbon flavor elevates this jam to something extraordinary.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1 vanilla bean or 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 12 tbsp pectin (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fruit: Wash the blackberries thoroughly and remove any stems. Mash them slightly to release juices.
  2. Add Sugar and Lemon Juice: Stir in sugar and lemon juice, heating the mixture over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  3. Simmer the Mixture: Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium-low. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Add Bourbon and Vanilla: Stir in vanilla (seeds from vanilla bean or extract) and bourbon. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
  5. Test Consistency: Place a spoonful on a cold plate. Run your finger through it—if it wrinkles and doesn’t run, it’s ready.
  6. Jar the Jam: Ladle hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving some space at the top. Wipe rims clean for a proper seal.
  7. Seal and Store: If canning, process jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months. Open jars should be refrigerated and used within 3 weeks.

Notes

  • Frozen Berries: You can substitute fresh blackberries with frozen ones (thaw and drain them first).
  • Bourbon Substitutes: If you don’t drink bourbon, rum or brandy work as alternatives, though bourbon adds unique depth.
  • Vanilla Extract vs. Bean: For a richer flavor, use a vanilla bean. Scrape the seeds and add both the seeds and pod to the mixture.
  • Consistency Adjustments: Use more pectin for a thicker jam or blend for a smoother texture before adding bourbon and vanilla.
