Description

These Crispy Amish Onion Fritters are a simple yet flavorful treat! Made with sweet onions, a light batter, and fried to golden perfection, these fritters are crispy on the outside and tender inside. A classic Amish comfort food, they make the perfect snack, appetizer, or side dish—especially when served with a creamy dipping sauce or a dollop of sour cream!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk for extra flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal (for added crunch, optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Batter

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
  2. Stir in the beaten egg and milk until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Fold in the sliced onions, ensuring they are evenly coated.

Step 2: Fry the Fritters

  1. In a large skillet or deep pan, heat ½ inch of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  2. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, flattening slightly with a spatula.
  3. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Step 3: Serve & Enjoy!

  1. Serve warm with sour cream, ranch dressing, or a spicy aioli for dipping!

Notes

  • For extra crispiness: Add a bit of cornstarch (1 tablespoon) to the batter.
  • Make it spicier: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Storage & Reheating: Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in an air fryer or oven at 375°F for 5–7 minutes.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free flour instead of all-purpose flour.
