Description

Crispy Onion Rings are a popular, indulgent snack or side dish. With a crunchy, golden coating on the outside and a tender, sweet onion inside, these onion rings are perfect for dipping in your favorite sauces or enjoying on their own. A simple yet delicious treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 large onions (yellow or sweet onions work best)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a splash of vinegar to make buttermilk)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup regular breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: Peel the onions and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings carefully, discarding the smaller inner pieces.
  2. Make the batter: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. In another bowl, combine the buttermilk and egg.
  3. Coat the onion rings: Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, coating it evenly, then into the buttermilk mixture, and finally, coat it with a mix of panko and regular breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
  4. Heat the oil: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large frying pan or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Fry the onion rings: Fry the onion rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve: Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces, like ketchup, ranch, or a spicy mayo.

Notes

  • If you prefer baked onion rings, you can spray the coated onion rings with cooking spray and bake them at 425°F (220°C) for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • For an extra crispy texture, you can double-dip the onion rings (flour, buttermilk, then breadcrumbs again).
  • Adjust the seasoning to your taste; add a pinch of cayenne for some heat or more garlic powder for extra flavor.
