Description

This hearty and flavorful gyros casserole combines all the best elements of classic Greek gyros: tender seasoned meat, tangy feta cheese, and savory vegetables, all baked into a comforting, easy-to-make casserole. Perfect for a cozy family dinner or a casual weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb (or a combination of both)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup sliced cucumber
  • 1/2 cup kalamata olives, pitted and sliced
  • 2 cups cooked rice (or orzo pasta)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef or lamb, and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  3. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the oregano, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 1-2 minutes to toast the spices.
  5. In a large baking dish, layer the cooked rice (or orzo pasta) at the bottom.
  6. Top with the cooked meat mixture, spreading it out evenly.
  7. Add the chopped tomatoes, cucumber, and olives on top of the meat.
  8. Spread the crumbled feta cheese evenly over the casserole.
  9. Dot the top with spoonfuls of Greek yogurt for a creamy finish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through and the top is lightly golden.
  11. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • You can use ground chicken or turkey as a lighter alternative to beef or lamb.
  • Serve with a side of tzatziki sauce for extra flavor.
  • This casserole can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before baking.
