Ingredients
- For the Dough:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Red food coloring (a few drops)
- For the Sugar Coating:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- For Frying:
- Vegetable oil (enough for deep frying)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Dough:
In a medium pot, combine butter, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently. Once the butter melts, add in flour and baking powder all at once, stirring until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pot. -
Add Red Velvet Color:
Stir in a few drops of red food coloring into the dough until you achieve a vibrant red color. -
Heat the Oil:
Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a large pan or deep fryer to about 350°F (175°C). -
Pipe and Fry the Churros:
Transfer dough into a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle. Squeeze out 3-4 inch long churros into the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. -
Coat with Sugar:
Roll the freshly fried churros in a cinnamon-sugar mixture until coated. Serve immediately!
Notes
- Piping Bag Tip: If you don’t have a piping bag, use a ziplock bag with the tip cut off.
- Frying Tip: Ensure your oil is heated to 350°F for crispy churros. Overcrowding the pan can result in soggy churros.
