Ingredients

Units Scale

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 cup diced fresh jalapeños (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, beat together the softened butter, shredded cheddar, and Monterey Jack cheese.
  5. Add in the diced jalapeños and green onions, then mix well.
  6. Add the egg and milk to the cheese mixture, then gradually add the flour mixture. Stir until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Let the cheese squares cool for a few minutes before slicing into squares.

Notes

  • For extra heat, leave the jalapeño seeds in.
  • You can substitute the Monterey Jack cheese with any other mild cheese of your choice.
  • These squares can be served warm or at room temperature.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
