Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup diced cooked ham
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives (optional)
- 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat & Prep
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Step 3: Incorporate Butter
- Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 4: Add Wet Ingredients
- Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined.
- Fold in the shredded cheese, diced ham, and chives (if using).
Step 5: Shape the Biscuits
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently pat it to about ¾-inch thickness.
- Use a biscuit cutter (or a glass) to cut out biscuits and place them on the baking sheet.
- Re-roll any scraps and cut additional biscuits.
Step 6: Bake to Perfection
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
- Brush with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven for extra flavor.
Step 7: Serve & Enjoy
- Let the biscuits cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm!
Notes
- No buttermilk? Use ¾ cup milk + 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice, let sit for 5 minutes.
- For extra cheesiness, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top before baking.
- Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat in the oven for best results.
