Description

A classic Southern dish, Shrimp and Grits is a flavorful combination of creamy grits topped with savory shrimp cooked with bacon, onions, and garlic.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Grits:

  • 4 cups chicken broth (low sodium or no sodium added)
  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Shrimp:

  • 1 pound large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 4 slices bacon (chopped)
  • 1 small onion (finely diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (low sodium)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook Grits: In a saucepan, bring chicken broth to a boil, stir in grits, salt, and garlic powder. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for about 20-25 minutes. Stir in cream, cheese, and butter until melted.
  2. Cook Shrimp: In a skillet, cook bacon until crispy. Add onion, garlic, paprika, cayenne, and thyme. Add shrimp, broth, and lemon juice. Cook until shrimp is pink and cooked through.
  3. Serve shrimp over grits, garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • You can adjust the spice level by adding more or less cayenne pepper.
  • Feel free to customize the toppings with additional herbs or cheese.
