Description

Sloppy Joes are a nostalgic, savory, and tangy sandwich made with seasoned ground beef and served on soft, pillowy buns. Perfect for any casual gathering or busy weeknight, this dish is quick, satisfying, and customizable to suit your taste!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a leaner option)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it up into small pieces, until browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess grease and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté diced onions, bell pepper, and garlic for 4-5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Make the Sauce: Add browned beef back into the skillet. Stir in tomato paste, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  4. Toast the Buns: Toast hamburger buns either in a toaster or in a dry skillet over medium heat until golden and crispy.
  5. Assemble: Spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun, then top with the other half. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Lean Ground Beef Option: Use lean ground beef or ground turkey to reduce fat.
  • Customize the Sauce: Adjust the sweetness or tanginess of the sauce to your taste with more brown sugar, mustard, or vinegar.
  • Make it Spicy: Add a finely chopped jalapeño or a few dashes of hot sauce for extra heat.
