Ingredients

Units Scale

  • For the Sugar Cookies:

    • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 tsp baking soda
    • 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
    • 1/4 cup sour cream or buttermilk
  • For the Frosting:

    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 4 cups powdered sugar
    • 23 tbsp milk (adjust for consistency)
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • Food coloring (optional, for pink or red colors)
    • Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Make the Sugar Cookie Dough:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
    • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) and mix until well combined.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
    • Add the sour cream or buttermilk and mix until the dough comes together.
  2. Shape and Bake the Cookies:

    • Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls.
    • Place the dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
    • Gently flatten each dough ball with the bottom of a glass or your hand.
    • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  3. Prepare the Frosting:

    • In a medium bowl, beat together the softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth.
    • Gradually add the milk and vanilla extract and beat until fluffy and smooth.
    • If you want colored frosting, divide the frosting into separate bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to each.
    • Stir until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Frost the Cookies:

    • Once the cookies have completely cooled, spread the frosting on top using a butter knife or offset spatula.
    • Decorate with sprinkles or other fun toppings for an extra festive touch.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:

    • Enjoy your sweet and soft Valentine’s Day Frosted Sugar Cookies with loved ones!

Notes

  • Make sure your cookies are completely cooled before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • If you prefer a crispier cookie, bake them a little longer. For a softer, chewy texture, remove them from the oven when the edges are just golden.
  • These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week, or frozen for up to 3 months.
